How can we successfully plan and run an engaging sports science style program in the middle years that has a learner centred approach and uses themes to enhance student understanding and learning? In this session, you will learn about how the use of an exciting theme helps students make sense of sports science content and builds capacity as they move towards the senior years. We will explore this theme and examine how to conduct a needs analysis specifically for athletes in order to enhance their performance in their sport, all while linking in important content connected to the curriculum.

The expectation that teachers will use student achievement data to improve their instruction is a major feature of current educational reforms. Despite this, there is a sound body of international studies that demonstrate that many educators do not feel adequately prepared or confident in using data to enhance teaching and learning practice. Currently, there is an absence of professional development opportunities related to data driven decision making and techniques in a Health and Physical Education (HPE) context, which has hampered teachers’ efforts to use data, as well as their confidence in doing so. Accordingly, this session focuses on enhancing data informed practice to improve student learning and teaching practice within the HPE discipline, specifically focusing on Years 7-10. Participants will identify and understand principles associated with sound data collection practices and explore data collection methodologies and techniques, based on applied data examples.  LI: a) Understand attributes that enhance data quality (validity, reliability, triangulation, and moderation) b) Explore how data collection practices can be embedded and/or enhanced within their current teaching. c) Think critically to find solutions to overcome potential challenges. SC:  a) Be able to explain the concepts associated with data quality. b) Apply strategies to enhance data collection in your teaching practice.

Did you know that Ultimate Frisbee was first codified as a self-refereed sport by a group of high school students? Ultimate has never lost that spirit of young participants owing the game, but self-refereeing is still a skill that needs to be taught like throwing and catching. In this practical session, teachers will experience a self-refereed sport which helps develop students' self-advocacy skills - personal responsibility, respectful communication and setting physical boundaries.  LI: To understand how sport can be used to have a tangible effect on students' self-advocacy and confidence.   SC: a) To provide students with a structured means of governing their own involvement in physical activity b) To use the mechanics of self-refereeing in ultimate frisbee to facilitate a game self-refereed by students c) To use ‘Spirit Of The Game’ principles from ultimate frisbee (rule knowledge, avoiding fouls, fair-mindedness, self-control and communication) as a conflict resolution tool.

A Game Sense approach in physical education places the game at the heart of the session. It encourages the player to develop skills in a realistic context, to become more tactically aware, to make better decisions and to have more fun. Applying the Game Sense approach, this practical workshop will identify generic tactical problems and solutions within net/wall sports through focusing on a variety of tennis games and play practices. These games will form the foundation for enhanced game understanding and performance in other sports in the net/wall category and broaden your teaching repertoire of net/wall games.  LI: To be able to demonstrate game concepts and strategies in game categories (GS)- net/wall.   SC: To differentiate between curriculum levels in invasion games (such as moving into space vs providing support to ball the carrier) and be able to provide suitable level progressions.

Students in Years 7-9 this year have been entering secondary school after missing potentially 2 years of primary school swimming lessons. Without the ability to attend swimming lessons and having the opportunity to achieve the Victorian Water Safety Certificate standards, many students may encounter obstacles to participating in school camps, swimming carnivals and outside school activities.   In this workshop, we will explore alternative swimming and water safety programs for secondary students – including addressing risk taking behaviour in teens, aquatic pathways (training and employment), swimming carnivals and resources & programs available. Together, we will also navigate policies outlining requirements and qualifications needed to run your own programs at pools or open water venues. You will leave this workshop with the tools you need to ensure your students are able to safely enjoy Victorian waterways during secondary school and beyond.  LI: To be able to develop a safe and inclusive swimming and water safety program (S)  SC: a) To plan training that develops skills needed in an emergency such as CPR, first aid and lifesaving skills (S, LLPA)  b) Develop and implement a plan for safe participation in challenging aquatic activities in pools and the outdoors (S, CA)  c) Analyse factors that contribute to males aged 15-24 years having a greater risk of drowning compared to females (S)

In this session, we will go through the Spikeball workshops that we deliver in schools all across Victoria. Just like our school sessions, this will have three aims: 1. To have heaps of FUN! 2. To be physically active. 3. To learn something new.   At the end of the session, you should have the confidence and framework to run your own Spikeball session that aims to keep all students engaged the entire time. To do this, we will take you through heaps of simple activities and games that are strategically designed to create confidence-building experiences for everyone. This way, whether a student goes on to play roundnet/Spikeball or not, they will hopefully take away an experience that encourages them to keep trying new things and experience the joy of skill progression and even mastery.  Join in!

There is developing evidence to suggest that learning about physical activity, may be as important as participating in physical activity during school HPE. If physical educators are serious about developing physically literate and physically active adults, then explicit teaching in units of work that engage in the HBPA/LLPA focus is essential. This workshop session will provide teachers with higher order skills and knowledge where learning is grounded about students’ self-assessment, self-management, and self-monitoring skills, as well as their dispositions, confidence, and competence towards physical activity.  LI: To be able to develop knowledge, skills, and understandings to participate in physical activities designed to enhance health, wellbeing and fitness, and design, apply and evaluate strategies for incorporating these activities into their lives.   SC: To plan teaching and learning activities that develop fitness knowledge in the areas of self-management, self-assessment, and self-monitoring.

.Join us for our Keynote speaker and presentation in this time. Presented by Dr Zali Yager, The Embrace Collective. So many young people experience high levels of pressure around their appearance, and 77% of Australian adolescents report experiencing body image distress. The past two years have seen a rapid rise in body image concerns and eating disorder presentations, particularly among 5-12 year olds. So how do we teach about body image in ways that support our students to accept and appreciate their own and others’ appearance? And how do we teach about nutrition and health in ways that are safe for students who may be vulnerable to, currently experiencing, or in recovery from, an eating disorder? In this keynote, Dr Zali Yager will provide clear guidance on what is and is not helpful when teaching about food, weight, movement, and body image, and provide details of new and exciting programs to bring fresh content to your classroom.

It is important that students take responsibility for their actions, and schools can facilitate this by providing them with clear goals, expectations, and incentives to strive towards. Creating a sport specific program for students acts as positive reinforcement for good behaviours at school. This session will guide wellbeing leaders and teachers to implement positive reinforcement to maximise positive student behaviours.  If you're looking for ways to engage students in the classroom, implementing a sports program may be just what your students need to become better versions of themselves. Come and hear about how we have applied this successfully in our school setting, and how you can too!  LI: To understand how to use positive reinforcement in the form of sport to enhance student behaviour in the classroom.  SC: a) To develop a program for students to achieve learning goals in the classroom. b) To enhance student collaboration between differing year levels.

As an Advanced Sports Dietitian, I specialise in the realm of high-performance nutrition. Over the course of more than two decades, I've had the privilege of working with many of Australia’s elite athletes and teams. Throughout my experience, I've observed a worrying trend: a significant lack of confidence among teenagers, developing athletes, and even elite performers when it comes to fuelling their bodies. Consequently, their health, well-being and then their performance suffers. It's time to turn this trend around, and I'm here to help HPE teachers do just that. By engaging in this practical workshop, you will develop the understanding and self-assurance needed to support and fuel not only your students' but importantly your own pursuits in sports, academics, and personal growth. I can’t wait to show you what you can achieve through the power of performance nutrition. Get ready to level up your nutrition knowledge, skills and confidence to FUEL YOUR GOALS!  LI: To understand how our unique and individualised fuelling requirements change on a daily basis.  SC:  a) To evaluate fuelling and nutrition requirements from a range of individualised situations. b) To use a periodised approach to plan fuelling and nutrition goals.
