Get ready for National Health & Physical Education (HPE) Day – 12 September 2019!

Celebrated this year on Thursday 12 September, Health & Physical Education (HPE) Day is a nationwide initiative highlighting the importance of HPE in the Australian Curriculum, and its influence on the lifelong learning and development of healthy behaviours in our children.

With Australian school children’s physical activity levels ranking among the lowest globally, National HPE Day has been introduced to help raise awareness of, and advocate for, a greater focus of HPE in our schools.

This year’s theme is ‘Good for Children, Good for Schools and Good for Communities’. ACHPER encourages schools, children, teachers and communities to get involved, take photos and videos of active participation in physical activity, and upload them to social media using the #HPEday hashtag.

Here's our CEO Hilary Shelton with a short message on why you should get involved in National #HPEday >>
Ideas and free resources for teachers and schools

The National HPE Day website provides some great ideas and activities your school can undertake to demonstrate how much it values this important learning area in the curriculum.

For example, if you’re a teacher, why not take your class outside for a lesson or organise a PE-related excursion? And schools, consider planning a fun run or walk for your students?

Click here to access free downloadable fact sheets, resources and posters to start planning your activities now! ACHPER Victoria has also released an HPE Day #TipOfTheWeekHPE packed with games and ideas to help celebrate. Check it out here.

Both events are completely FREE and schools are encouraged to bring their students along for a fun day of active participation.

ACHPER Victoria is also proud to support Monash University’s HPE Lecture Series. The next seminar will be also held on National HPE Day and will be presented by Dr Justen O’Connor and Jess Wade and is entitled “Differentiating assessment for learning in health and physical education”.

Monash University:

HPE Day Lecture

Time: 5:30pm – 7:30pm

Assessment in the movement and physical activity strand of the HPE curriculum has traditionally captured how talented the participant already is and not what they have learned as a result of their efforts in class. Traditionally it has focused on the motor domain and only superficially evaluated knowledge, attitudes and behaviour, whilst largely ignoring other key learning outcomes.

This seminar will include a practical workshop providing a range of ideas teachers can use in their own class and to assess growth in a range of social, physical and knowledge-based areas. Many of these ideas have been trialled within an actual school health and physical education context and will provide examples for how students can negotiate their assessment to showcase growth across time.
