Have your say: public consultation on proposed revisions to the Australian Curriculum: HPE now open

As you may well be aware, the public consultation period for reviewing the proposed revisions to the Australian Curriculum: Health and Physical Education (HPE) is now open.

The overall aim of the review is to improve the Australian Curriculum from Foundation to Year 10 by refining, realigning and decluttering the content of the curriculum by providing more clarity around what is important for students to learn, and therefore what teachers need to teach. In particular, the review aims to refine and reduce the amount of content and duplication where possible and improve the quality of content descriptions and achievement standards.

As per the ACARA website, the proposed revisions “...make clear the essential HPE knowledge, understanding and skills students need to be confident and creative individuals, successful lifelong learners and active, informed members of the community. These revisions also ensure our curriculum remains world class.”

The current F–10 Australian Curriculum: HPE was first published in 2014. Traditionally, HPE is the learning area responsible for addressing numerous social issues that arise in broader society. However, since originally published there has been increased focus on the role of the school in addressing additional issues including respectful relationships, consent education, diet quality and physical activity participation levels.

The suggested revisions have addressed these issues and strengthened the content and guidance for teachers on how to deliver learning in these areas of the curriculum. The refinements have been informed by key experts, who have provided guidance and support to interpret the evidence base into curriculum content.

To ensure HPE teachers are actively involved in the consultation and that their voices and views are strongly represented, we encourage teachers to visit the consultation website to learn more about what's required to respond appropriately to the planned revisions.
