Public health organisations have been at the forefront of efforts to reduce smoking-related harms in Australia over the past 30 years. Their efforts to reduce smoking rates have paid off. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (2022) smoking rates have consistently decreased since 1991. BUT, smoking is still the leading cause of preventable death and disease.  In recent times a new threat to public health has emerged – VAPING. Data analysed by Cancer Council Victoria’s Centre for Behavioural Research in Cancer shows sharp increases in the use of e-cigarettes (a.k.a vapes) by young people, including teenagers. We have also witnessed for the first time in 30 years an increase in young people smoking.  Research by ANU has found that young people who vape are three times as likely to take up smoking. Given the increase in numbers of young people vaping and the relationship this has to smoking, public health groups have begun lobbying for change via the introduction of new laws, regulations and education programs aimed at young people’s recreational use of e-cigarettes (a.k.a vaping).      In this presentation we will spend time exploring the suite of classroom resources that were launched earlier this year that specifically address vaping.   We will spend time covering the key ideas that underpin the development of the resource. Presenters will also provide an update of the changing government regulations and data.

For a while now HPE has been somewhat fixated on the 4-Game classification frame as a basis for models-and games-based approaches (invasion; net/wall; striking/fielding; target games). Consequently, teachers can find themselves teaching competitive tactics in net-wall games to learners who may not be that interested and likely won't use them outside of PE. The way people participate in sport globally has been changing for some time, COVID has accelerated that change and HPE needs to catch up. This presentation unpacks participation trends and argues for an expansion of sport classification that opens HPE up to more meaningful learning opportunities.
